Manufacturing Precision
At Keystone, we pride ourselves on manufacturing custom precision threaded products for many industries. But before the actual threading begins, centerless grinders play a critical role. Our raw material comes in standard sizes and often requires precise diameter adjustments to meet our customers’ needs. We use centerless grinders to literally grind away surface material to achieve the correct diameter before thread rolling.
The Cincinnati #2OM Centerless Grinder
Our newest grinder, the Cincinnati #2OM Centerless Grinder, was delivered to Keystone at the end of August and marks Phase 3 of our production transformation into lean manufacturing. It is one of the most popular centerless grinders on the market and for good reason. It’s a very versatile machine for both in-feed and thru-feed grinding and capable of handling a wide range of common part sizes. It’s also a favorite among operators for its intuitive and ergonomic controls.
Grinding Efficiency Upgrades
The Cincinnati #2OM came with many efficiency upgrades, including advanced numerical control technologies, a bigger wheel, and a more powerful motor. Servo-electrical controls not only allow for greater wheel position accuracy and repeatability, but simplified data entry and a graphic interface also make it extremely easy to use. The larger wheel provides a longer surface area for grinding. Combined with our 75 Hp motor upgrade, we can remove greater amounts of material per pass, which reduces the need for multiple passes.
According to our head grinder, Bobby, “With most of our normal grinders, there’s a certain limit that you can grind off before the material starts to warp. This one has a bigger wheel. You have a longer surface area to grind on, so it allows us to get more off in a single pass, so we can cut down the amount of time we have to work on the material.” This means less cost for Keystone and lower prices for our customers.
The control screen provides at-a-glance visual reference, displaying the machine state, cycle time, date, time, axis position, cycle status, current feed rate, and wheel speed. “The screen literally lays out everything for you and tells you what the grinder is doing. There’s a meter that fluctuates, so you can see if the wheels are under wear or if they’re under any pressure,” Bobby noted. “It’s just an overall more advanced machine.”
